SIKC - Night Race
Pretty much the perfect way to end the 2022 Sydney racing season at Sydney Motorsport Park.
It was my first time racing on the shorter 864m circuit and under lights at night, so there was a bit of learning to do in the morning practice sessions to make sure we had the right setup. The short circuit has a tricky double apex left hander at the top of the circuit, so we had to make sure we could keep the RPM’s high without effecting top end speed for the rest of the track. Usually the engine can stretch its legs all the way over the top of the hill to the Kart Shop … but not tonight!
Qualified on pole, then won the first 2 races. Unfortunately, we didn’t quite have the balance right in Race 3, and it actually looked like we had de-tuned the kart. Hung on for second place in the race, but at least we knew exactly what we had to do to, so it was kind of a blessing in the end.
We got to work back in the pits adjusting the camber and toe settings back to morning qualifying, as well as tweaking the front and rear track widths to adress the oversteer problem. We took a punt on some higher tyre pressures … and it all come together!
Kart was on rails in the final under lights. and Angus eased away by half race distance to win by 2 seconds at the finish.
So awesome to race under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park for the last local race of the season, it just felt so quick at night! #absolutelymental
Couple of weeks off now and then the last race of the year in Lithgow in December to wrap things up and start preparations for 2023 with the Velocity Race Division Team.
